St. Mary's is extremely proud to have one of the nation's leading orthopedic spine surgeons, Dr. Jian Shen, operating at St. Mary's.

Fellowship-trained in spine surgery, Dr. Shen will be performing procedures that are unique to our region - in the area's only 5-star rated orthopedic surgical program. He is well versed in both non-operative and operative treatment of all spine conditions of patients of all ages, including back pain, neck pain, sciatica, leg pain, shoulder and arm pain. His primary expertise is minimally invasive decompression/ fusion surgery, as well as complex deformity/scoliosis and revision spine surgery.
Dr. Shen earned his PhD in basic science research in pharmacology and finished his medical school education at Cornell University Medical College in New York City. After a surgical internship at the Mayo Clinic, he completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. Dr. Shen then went on to finish a spine surgery fellowship at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco before joining us.
About the RenaissanceTM robotics guidance system.
In June 2013 St. Mary's commitment to improved patient care led us to acquire the region's first cutting-edge system for minimally invasive spine surgery - a state-of-the-art RenaissanceTM guidance system from Mazor Robotics.
The equipment - the only robotics technology for minimally invasive spine surgery currently available in the marketplace - ensures greater accuracy and a higher level of safety for patients. 
It is expected to bolster the number of minimally invasive and complex spine surgery procedures performed at St. Mary's.
The RenaissanceTM robotics guidance system has been clinically validated to ensure 1.5mm accuracy for increased patient safety compared to freehand spine surgery. Before entering the operating room, surgeons use Renaissance to pre-plan the optimal surgery in a CT-based 3D simulation of the patient's spine. During surgery, Renaissance guides the surgeon's hand and tools to the precise pre-planned location.
Robotic guidance offers patients many benefits including reduced blood loss, fewer complications, fewer revisions, faster recovery, reduced procedure time, and reduced exposure to radiation.
