The burden of cancer in New York State is considerable. Each year, over 110,000 New Yorkers learn they have cancer, and about 35,000 succumb to the disease, making it the second leading cause of death in the state.

St. Mary’s Healthcare is committed to reduce the cancer burden in our community and is the only hospital in New York State that holds all three competitive cancer grants funded by the New York State Department of Health. The Cancer Services Program, the Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education Program, and the Community Cancer Prevention in Action project work collectively to provide cancer education, prevention, screenings, and reduction strategies.

Cancer Services Program

CANCER SERVICES WEB

The Cancer Services Program facilitates access to high-quality breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screenings and diagnostic follow up services in Fulton, Montgomery, and Schenectady Counties. These life-saving screenings are offered to uninsured men and women at no cost. For more information or to schedule a screening, please contact Suzanne Hagadorn, Program Manager, at 518-770-6814 or

Cancer Peer Education

CANCER PEER ED WEB

The Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education Program of Fulton, Montgomery, Schenectady and Saratoga County strives to increase New York’s breast cancer screening rate by 10% over the next five years. This program is also to increase the number of men who discuss both the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening with their healthcare providers. The intention of cancer peer education is that familiar people will be conducting education to local individuals who may have a barrier to care to discuss meaningful health information and to promote healthy behaviors. We would like to build community partnerships in all four counties that we serve. For more information please contact, Diana Gonzalez, Coordinator, at 518-770-7828 or

Community Cancer Prevention in Action

CPIA WEB

The Community Cancer Prevention in Action Program supports local cancer prevention and risk reduction interventions for Fulton, Montgomery, and Schenectady Counties. The program will increase the adoption of sun safety policies and practices in community settings. The program will increase the adoption of worksite policies that establish paid time off benefits for employees to obtain cancer screenings. In addition, the program will increase the number of education interventions to build support for the HPV vaccine. For more information please contact, Ginger Champain program coordinator, at 518-770-6815 or
