At St. Mary’s Healthcare we provide both adult and pediatric services. Services are provided in our inpatient, acute and sub-acute rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, and long-term care settings. We work to provide coordinated care and intervention by working closely with families, medical providers, and rehabilitation team. Services include:

Speech Therapy Assessment and Treatment for Adults

    Speech and Voice:

    - Oral motor strengthening for dysarthria (weakness in the muscles used for speech)
    - Oral and verbal motor planning due to oral/verbal apraxia (impaired voluntary control of movements)
    - Fluency treatment for people with dysfluency (stuttering)
    - Voice treatment for those with differences in voice quality due to vocal cord pathology or voice misuse (requires referral to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor before starting treatment)

    Language, Cognition, and Communication:

    - Aphasia treatment for patients who have difficulty finding words post-stroke
    - Cognitive therapy for those with impaired memory, problem solving, and organization post-stroke, head injury, or other neurological diagnoses
    - Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) for those who are unable to meet their communication needs through speech or writing

    Swallowing (Dysphagia – Impaired swallowing):

    - Clinical Swallow Evaluations and Bedside Swallow Evaluations
    - Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)
    - Myofascial release for swallowing impairment post radiation treatment to head and neck
    - Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS) (booked through Patient Access by dialing (518) 841-7224 and requires physician script)

 

Speech Therapy Assessment and Treatment for Children (Birth-17 years of age)

    Speech and Voice:

    - Articulation and phonological treatment due to delayed speech development
    - Oral and verbal motor planning for those with a diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech or acquired oral/verbal apraxia
    - Oral and motor strengthening due to low oral tone and/or dysarthria
    - Fluency treatment for children who stutter
    - Voice treatment due to vocal cord pathology or voice misuse (requires referral to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor before starting treatment)

    Language and Communication:

    - Language stimulation to improve vocabulary and communication for children described as “late talkers”
    - Social skills (pragmatic) development for children diagnosed with Autism

    Swallowing:

    - Feeding assessment and treatment for the child who is a “picky eater” or exhibiting moderate-severe food selectiveness
    - Clinical Swallow Evaluations to assess and rule-out physical impairment as contributing to existing feeding difficulties
