St. Mary’s Healthcare, Amsterdam among the Best Nationally
Amsterdam, New York - (October 20, 2015) – St. Mary’s Healthcare, Amsterdam released today that it has been recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best™ Hospitals for Orthopedic Services. Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions in order to find the right doctor, the right hospital, and the right care, evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions and identified the 100 best-performing hospitals across all conditions or procedures within this service line.
Dr. William Mayer, Vice President for Medical Affairs at St. Mary’s noted the commitment to quality and the contributions of all of the hospital staff members in making this designation possible. “St. Mary’s associates and physicians work as a team”, stated Dr. Mayer, “and our openness to ideas about what works best for patients is paramount to our decisions”. Dr. Russell Cecil, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, echoed these sentiments. “Our experienced orthopedic team believes that each patient deserves an exceptional experience”, said Dr. Cecil. “Being identified as one of the nation’s top 100 hospitals for Orthopedics, as well as being named for 11 other 5-star and excellence awards, offers a great deal of credibility to our efforts”, said a smiling Dr. Cecil. He continued, “We know that hospitals that have achieved the Healthgrades distinction have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality care; I am proud to be an integral part of this prestigious organization.”
Dr. Cecil and his orthopedic partners Dr. Gerald Ortiz and Dr. Jian Shen are not strangers when it comes to receiving recognition from Healthgrades. Dr. Jian Shen specializes in treatment of the spine, including nationally renowned minimally invasive spine surgery. “I am honored that the work that we do results in positive outcomes for patients who have suffered for years with spinal issues”, he stated. He continued, "Over 3000 spine surgeries, great results, no nerve injury or infection. I am confident we offer the best quality minimally invasive spine surgeries not only in the Capital Region, but also anywhere in the world." “And of course, these successful outcomes could not be achieved without the highly qualified surgical staff at St. Mary’s with whom I am fortunate to work.” Dr. Gerald Ortiz, who specializes in treatment of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle, also applauds the team effort that generates this kind of recognition. “One of the reasons I choose to operate at St. Mary’s is the dedicated, highly skilled staff. Patients are the beneficiaries of the compassion AND the talent of our team”, stated Dr. Ortiz.
In addition to being recognized as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Orthopedic Services by Healthgrades for 2016, St. Mary’s also received the following distinctions:

These achievements are part of findings released today [October 20] online and in the Healthgrades 2016 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals both nationally and regionally. This variation in care may have a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2012 through 2014, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5 stars as a group, on average 222,392 lives could potentially have been saved and 166,086 complications could potentially have been avoided.* A 5-star rating indicates that St. Mary’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or conducting the procedure being evaluated.
Vic Giulianelli, President and CEO, praised the team effort and outcomes. “It is another year of outstanding achievement, he stated. “We extend congratulations once again to the medical staff, the O.R. Staff, Ambulatory Surgery Staff, Nursing Care Units like Progressive Care and Maternity, Housekeeping, Central Sterile Supply, Rehabilitation Services, Medical Imaging, Pharmacy, Clinical Resource Management and all of the associates who are part of our integrated care network. All have worked tirelessly and effectively to accomplish this outstanding achievement”, he concluded.
