Ask The Provider: Thomas Quigley, PT, DPT
Q: Why does the room spin when I roll over in bed, look up, or change positions?

A: You may have BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), one of the most common causes of dizziness. BPPV occurs when tiny crystals in the inner ear move into the wrong location, causing brief episodes of spinning when you roll over in bed, look up, or change positions.
Physical therapy can help. A vestibular physical therapist can perform specialized repositioning maneuvers that move the crystals back where they belong. In many cases, symptoms improve significantly in just one or a few treatment sessions.
If you think you may be experiencing symptoms related to BPPV, consult with your physician to see if treatment with a vestibular physical therapist is indicated.
